Guasha Therapy: When, Where and How it can help?

Updated: Jan 23

Guasha therapy, also called scraping therapy, is an age-old healing practice originating in East Asia, primarily China. This technique involves the gentle scraping or rubbing of the skin's surface using a smooth-edged tool. This process creates visible redness or bruising, and the term 'guasha' translates to 'scraping sand' in Chinese.

In a guasha session, the practitioner applies a lubricant, such as oil or balm, to the skin and employs a specialized tool, often crafted from materials like jade or horn. This tool is used to gently scrape or rub the skin in specific patterns or directions, resulting in the appearance of light bruising or redness, referred to as 'sha,' which is regarded as a therapeutic response.

The fundamental principle underpinning guasha therapy revolves around the concept that the obstruction or stagnation of energy, blood, or bodily fluids can result in pain, inflammation, and a variety of health issues. Guasha endeavors to facilitate the unimpeded flow of Qi (energy) and blood by releasing these blockages and expelling toxins from the body.

Guasha therapy is frequently employed to address issues like muscle and joint discomfort, tension, and rigidity. It is believed to offer pain relief, enhance circulation, diminish inflammation, and support the healing process. Guasha is commonly administered to areas of the body afflicted by pain or discomfort, including the back, neck, shoulders, and limbs.

Process of Guasha Therapy

To prepare you for treatment, your technician will put oil on your body. They’ll then use the stone-like guasha massage tool to scrape to your skin in long, downward strokes. This is when you’ll notice areas of petechiae on your skin.

Most people get guasha on their back, neck, butt, arms, legs.

At first, they'll gently use the tool on your skin. Gradually, add more pressure to the strokes. They’ll only apply as much pressure as you’re comfortable with.

This process is believed to help blood flow and create a “lifting” effect on your skin, which some say may help lessen toxins in your body and promote healing.

Benefits of Guasha therapy and conditions that can be treated with it

Guasha therapy is believed to offer several potential benefits, although it's important to note that scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. The perceived benefits of gua sha therapy include:

  • Pain relief: Guasha therapy is commonly used to alleviate muscle & joint pain. It is believed to help relax muscles, reduce inflammation, and promote blood flow, potentially providing temporary relief from conditions such as muscle tension, chronic pain, and sports injuries.

  • Improved circulation: The scraping action of guasha is thought to stimulate blood flow and microcirculation in the treated area. This increased circulation may promote the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells, facilitating healing and supporting overall well-being.

  • Reduction of muscle tension and stiffness: Guasha therapy is believed to help release muscle tension and stiffness by promoting relaxation of the muscles and improving flexibility. It may be used to address conditions such as neck and shoulder tension, tight muscles, and restricted range of motion.

  • Detoxification & removal of toxins: Guasha is believed to promote the removal of toxins and metabolic waste from the body by stimulating the lymphatic system and enhancing circulation. It is thought to assist in the detoxification process, supporting overall health and well-being.

  • Reduction of inflammation: Guasha therapy may help reduce inflammation by increasing blood flow and releasing stagnation in the body. It is believed to have an anti-inflammatory effect, potentially benefiting conditions such as arthritis, tendonitis, and other inflammatory conditions.

  • Facial rejuvenation: Guasha is also used as a beauty and wellness treatment for the face. It is believed to promote lymphatic drainage, stimulate collagen production, and improve circulation, potentially leading to improved skin tone, reduced puffiness, and a more radiant complexion.

  • Migraine headaches: If your migraine headaches don’t respond to over-the-counter medications, guasha may help.

  • Neck pain: Guasha technique may also prove effective for remedying chronic neck pain.

  • Perimenopausal syndrome: Perimenopause occurs as women move closer to menopause. Symptoms include: insomnia, irregular periods, anxiety, fatigue, hot flashes.

Guasha therapy can also help to treat musculoskeletal pain, such as back pain and joint pain, sports injuries and strains, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, respiratory conditions, such as asthma and bronchitis, digestive disorders, including bloating, indigestion, and constipation, skin conditions, such as acne and eczema (facial gua sha), stress and tension-related disorders.

Why to use Guasha therapy over complementary medicine?

People may choose to use guasha therapy as a complementary or alternative approach to traditional medicine for several reasons:

  • Natural and non-invasive: Guasha therapy is a non-invasive treatment that utilizes natural tools and techniques without the use of medications or invasive procedures. Some individuals prefer this more holistic approach and may seek alternatives to pharmaceutical drugs or surgical interventions.

  • Cultural and traditional significance: Guasha therapy has a long history in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Chinese medicine. It carries cultural and traditional significance for many individuals who value and trust these ancient healing practices.

  • Personal preference: Some people may have personal preferences for natural and holistic therapies, seeking alternatives to conventional medicine. They may prefer to explore non-pharmacological and non-invasive options for managing their health conditions.

  • Wellness and prevention: Guasha therapy is not limited to treating specific ailments but is also used for general wellness and preventive care. It is believed to promote overall well-being, balance the body's energy, and enhance circulation. People may choose gua sha therapy as a means of supporting their overall health and maintaining wellness.

  • Individual experiences and testimonials: Positive personal experiences or testimonials from others who have found relief or improvement through gua sha therapy may influence individuals to try it for themselves. Such anecdotal evidence can play a role in decision-making, especially when conventional treatments have not provided satisfactory results.
